Located at an elevation of about 3900 ft above sea level Punakha is much warmer compared to other regions in Northern Bhutan. It is the ancient capital of Bhutan and it is the winter home of the Chief Abbot of Bhutan, the Je Khenpo. Punakha is linked to some of the most momentous events in Bhutanese history and deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful and significant regions at the heart of Bhutanese culture.
